What Is AcuSound? About Our Ear Acupuncture and Tuning Fork Therapy

Do you ever find that even when you have a moment to yourself, it’s difficult to switch off? Everyday demands can leave little space to pause—and sometimes, setting aside time to rest is the first step towards making that space.

At SmartHealth Clinic in Beeston, Nottingham, we’ve created AcuSound Ear Acupuncture & Tuning Forks: a four-week wellbeing programme that brings together ear acupuncture and elements of integral sound healing. It offers a quiet, welcoming environment where you can step away from your routine and take some time for yourself.

Bringing ear acupuncture and elements of sound healing together

AcuSound combines the five ear-acupuncture points used in the NADA protocol with the tones and gentle vibrations of therapeutic tuning forks.

The ear-acupuncture element follows a standardised protocol, while the tuning forks introduce an additional sensory experience as you rest. We call this combination AcuSound—a distinctive wellbeing treatment offered at SmartHealth Clinic.

The programme supports relaxation and general wellbeing. There’s no particular feeling you need to achieve during a session, and everyone’s experience will be different.

What happens during a session?

Before your programme begins, we’ll complete a brief health and suitability assessment. This is also your chance to tell us what has brought you in and ask any questions, especially if ear acupuncture or sound healing is new to you.

During each 30-minute appointment, we gently insert up to five fine, sterile, single-use acupuncture needles into specific points in each outer ear. We then activate selected tuning forks and incorporate them into the session, introducing tones, harmonic intervals, and gentle vibration.

You’ll have time to rest quietly in a calm, supportive setting. There’s no need for extensive talking or any previous experience of meditation or sound healing—we’ll explain the process and help you settle in.

Understanding the five ear-acupuncture points

AcuSound uses the five traditional points included in the NADA protocol: Sympathetic, Shen Men (also known as “Spirit Gate”), Kidney, Liver and Lung. These are traditional point names, rather than an indication that the session treats conditions affecting those organs.

This approach uses the same set of ear points, rather than selecting individual points after a full Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis. It provides a consistent structure for your appointments throughout the programme.

AcuSound builds on this ear-acupuncture protocol by adding therapeutic tuning forks, so it is different from a standalone NADA protocol session.

Where do the tuning forks come in?

Tuning forks are instruments that produce specific tones and vibrations when activated. During AcuSound, we use selected combinations based on the Beaulieu approach, creating harmonic intervals—different tones sounded together.

Sound and gentle vibration become part of the experience while you rest. You don’t need to concentrate on the tones or respond in a particular way; there is simply space to notice the experience for yourself.

Could AcuSound be for you?

Perhaps your days feel full and your mind stays busy long after everything else has quietened down. You might be navigating a period of change, feeling overstimulated, or simply looking for a regular opportunity to pause.

AcuSound may appeal to you if you prefer a quiet treatment without extensive talking, or if you’re curious about experiencing ear acupuncture alongside sound and vibration. You don’t need to wait until life feels overwhelming to make room for rest.

Individual responses vary. AcuSound is a complementary wellbeing treatment and does not replace medical treatment or mental-health care. If you’re unsure whether it’s suitable for you, we’re happy to discuss this before you book.

Why a four-week programme?

Slowing down can take practice, especially when feeling busy or under pressure has become familiar. That’s why AcuSound is offered as a four-week programme, giving you repeated opportunities to pause, experience the treatment and become familiar with how you respond.

Your programme includes two 30-minute sessions each week for four weeks—eight appointments in total. Each session brings together ear acupuncture, therapeutic tuning forks and quiet relaxation time.

This regular rhythm gives you time to settle into the experience and reflect on any changes you notice in how you feel. Our intention is to support an ongoing practice of rest and relaxation, with regular check-ins along the way. Everyone responds differently, and four weeks does not guarantee a particular outcome.

Is it the same as a full acupuncture treatment?

AcuSound is a focused wellbeing programme using a standardised ear-acupuncture protocol. It does not include a full Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis or individually tailored body acupuncture.

If you have a specific health concern or are unsure which appointment to choose, please contact us first. We can explain the options available at the clinic and discuss whether AcuSound suits your needs.
