What happens during your first treatment session?Your first session includes a detailed consultation to understand your health history, goals, and symptoms. This is followed by physical assessment (including pulse, tongue, and movement analysis), you will be advised of the recommended treatment plan, and a personalised hands-on treatment plan using the most appropriate techniques for you.
-
How long are the sessions? Our Massage and Manual Therapy sessions are 60 minutes long. This includes: An initial consultation and assessment, and A full hands-on treatment using a combination of techniques recommended by your therapist, tailored to your specific needs. We also offer specialist sessions such as the Bat Bench (Spinal Decompression Bench) and BEMER Therapy, which are generally shorter due to the optimal duration of device-based treatments: These sessions typically last up to 30 minutes. Your first appointment for either of these may take up to 45 minutes to allow time for consultation and setup.
-
How should I prepare for a session, and how should I plan my day afterwards? To get the most out of your treatment, we recommend the following: Before your session Eat on the day of your appointment, ideally with your last meal at least one hour prior to treatment. Stay well-hydrated, as proper hydration supports the body’s ability to release tension and detoxify. Avoid stimulants such as coffee, strong tea, and energy drinks before your session, as they can interfere with your body’s natural relaxation response. If you use a tongue scraper, please refrain from doing so for three days before your treatment. Tongue coating provides valuable insight during Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnosis. If you are currently taking any medications or supplements, bring a written list with their names to your appointment. After your session Avoid strenuous exercise or intense training immediately after treatment, as your body needs time to integrate the changes. Light activity, such as walking or gentle mobility exercises, can be beneficial and help extend the effects of your session. Continue to drink plenty of water to support your body’s healing and recovery processes.
-
Do I need to bring or wear anything specific? Please wear loose, comfortable clothing, gym clothing. If you’re booked for Bat Bench (Spinal Decompression Bench) or cupping, it may be helpful to bring a vest or sports bra and flexible trousers. All equipment and therapy tools will be provided.
-
Are any of the treatments painful?Treatments are designed to be therapeutic, not painful. You may feel deep pressure or intense release during certain techniques (like gua sha or cupping), but most clients describe the experience as relieving and calming. You’re always encouraged to give feedback during your session. Some aspects of the treatment may cause discomfort or make the affected area tender, but the aim is to release tension and ultimately relieve pain.
-
Can I book a treatment for prevention, not only for acute conditions?Absolutely. Many of our clients come in for preventive care, stress management, energy balancing, and postural support. You don’t need to be in pain to benefit from treatment.
-
What is the Bat Bench (or Spinal Decompression Bench)This is a spinal decompression bench designed to relieve pressure from the spine and improve alignment through controlled inversion therapy. It’s always used under guidance, and is especially helpful for back pain, sciatica, and postural tension.

What is BEMER therapy and who is it for?BEMER Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMF) to stimulate microcirculation — the flow of blood in the smallest vessels. By improving circulation at this level, BEMER supports the body’s ability to: Boost energy and vitality Enhance recovery and healing Reduce stress and fatigue Support those with chronic conditions or reduced mobility It’s suitable for anyone looking to improve their overall wellbeing, whether you’re recovering from physical strain, dealing with long-term health concerns, or simply seeking more energy and balance in daily life. What happens during a BEMER session? The treatment is delivered while you lie on a BEMER mat placed over the therapy couch. A smaller targeted pad may also be applied to a specific area of the body — such as the lower back, knee, or shoulder — depending on your needs. These areas are discussed with your therapist during the session. Try-outs and personal use We offer trial sessions so you can experience the benefits first-hand. If you’re interested in purchasing your own BEMER device for home use, we’re happy to provide guidance and support.
-
Can I combine therapies in one session?Yes — many therapies are already blended into your 60-minute massage and manual therapy session. Your therapist will select and combine techniques such as acupressure, cupping, gua sha, massage, and joint corrections, based on your specific needs and treatment goals. What happens during your session is always discussed with you beforehand. Your therapist will explain the recommended techniques and ask for your consent. You are welcome to decline any method (e.g. cupping), and your therapist will adjust the treatment accordingly to ensure you feel comfortable and supported. Can you combine BEMER therapy or the Bat Bench (Decompression Table) with other therapies? BEMER therapy can be combined with other treatments, but it requires a separate booking slot, as it is not part of the standard manual therapy session. The Bat Bench (Decompression Bench) can complement many manual therapy methods — including massage and ear acupuncture — to improve overall effectiveness. However, a separate session must be booked for this as well.
-
Is manual therapy or massage suitable if I have a disc problem (e.g. herniated or bulging disc)?Yes — in most cases, manual therapy and massage can be highly beneficial for individuals with disc-related conditions such as herniated or bulging discs. Our treatments are always tailored to your specific needs, using gentle yet effective techniques to reduce muscle tension, support healthy spinal alignment, and help alleviate nerve pressure. Your therapist will carry out a thorough assessment before beginning treatment and may incorporate additional methods — such as cupping, acupressure, or the Denevérpad (Bat Bench) — where appropriate. We always recommend that you discuss any diagnosed spinal conditions during your consultation, so we can ensure the safest and most effective care for your situation.

Is manual therapy suitable during pregnancy?Yes — manual therapy can be safely and effectively adapted for pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters. It can help relieve common symptoms such as lower back pain, pelvic discomfort, sciatica, and muscle tension, all while supporting relaxation and circulation. At SmartHealth Clinic, treatments for pregnant clients are always gentle, fully tailored, and performed with appropriate positioning and support. However, we advise all clients to consult their midwife or GP before booking, especially during early pregnancy or if there are any medical concerns.
